Early Career Framework Glossary of Terms

  • ECT – Early Career Teacher. A teacher in their first two years of teaching. Replaces the term Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) from September 2021.
  • ECF – Early Career Framework. A framework of standards for early career teachers which underpins the statutory entitlement to early career professional development.
  • Lead provider – one of the national providers accredited by the DfE to provide funded ECF training, one of which is University College London (UCL) Institute of Education (IOE).
  • Delivery partner – an organisation working with a Lead Provider to deliver their programme to schools. All Teaching School Hubs, some MATs and some LAs are working as Delivery Partners for ECF.  Lead Providers have created the resources and programmes, Delivery Partners recruit schools, supports them and delivers the programme. Teaching School Hubs are the principal Delivery Partners nationally, and Coventry and Warwickshire Teaching School Hub is the Delivery Partner for UCL in our region.
  • AB – Appropriate Body. The accredited body that oversees the statutory induction of Early Career Teachers and assesses whether they have met the Teachers’ Standards. 
  • ECT Manager – an online management system used by many Appropriate Bodies, including Coventry and Central Warwickshire Teaching School Hub. It is an efficient, paperless way to register ECTs for induction and submit assessments. Formerly known as NQT manager.
  • Teaching School Hub (TSH)– Teaching School Hubs provide high-quality professional development to teachers at all stages of their careers. 
  • Facilitators – are current and former school leaders and teacher leaders recruited by the Delivery Partner. They are deployed to lead ECT and Mentor ECF professional development sessions. They may also be asked to conduct quality assurance on behalf of the Delivery Partner and Lead Provider. Facilitators are expected to attend the facilitator development sessions and agree to their facilitated sessions to be visited for Quality Assurance purposes, including by the DfE, Ofsted and/or any independent evaluator.
  • UCLeXtend – UCL’s online platform through which Delivery Partners, Induction Tutors, Mentors and ECTs access the ECF.
